Well, what did everyone think of this programme the other night?
While I thoroughly enjoyed seeing a fellow disabled parent I did feel it was still very patronising. There were some very positive messages in it such as the older child being bi lingual with English and B.S.L but on the other hand I felt there was a lot of emphasis on the mother's disbility. I felt quite angry when it was suggested that the child was already having problems expressing herself and had a row with her mum and dad. Too much was put on it being about the disability, how many other households with children see simialr scenes? That's called Family Life to me!
What do you all think?}}

I feel that the one episode where the daughter had problems in getting her mum to understand her was re-played in order to make the situation seem worse. I was particularly upset at both sets of grandparents attitudes towards their own grown-up children's impairments. Mostly very negative stuff, especially the woman's parents. My own Mum, when asked about me, is always very positive, and says what a cheerful soul I am and how I am the one person in my family who doesn't ever appear to be down in the dumps... and both parents seemed so upset at the fact that their child had married another disabled person - seeing that as negative, and that they would not have anyone to care for them....
What also seemed to be omitted was how bright her little girls seemed to be, and how articulate she seemed for her age. Compared to some of the children you see on these recent programmes about parents who have lost control and have no idea how to parent their children, their family seemed perfect!
