Trustee Vacancies

Disabled Parents Network (DPN) is a national organisation of and for disabled people who are parents or who hope to become parents, and their families, friends and supporters. DPN is run by volunteers, with a small number of paid employees.

Following recent considerable funding success (£600k over three years from the Big Lottery Fund, Comic Relief, Princess Royal Trust) Disabled Parents Network is enjoying a period of rapid development and growth. We are seeking key individuals to join our committed Board of Trustees at this exciting time.

Disabled Parents Network aims to educate and increase society’s acceptance of disability in parenthood. Our vision is of a society which accepts disability and parenthood and provides the opportunities and support to enable disabled people to have and to bring up their children on an equal basis with non-disabled parents. We are here for all parents, including parents with physical or sensory impairments, people with learning difficulties or long-term illnesses, people with mental health issues and Deaf parents.

Our broad purpose is to:

Specifically we are looking for people to take on the following key roles on the Board of Trustees:

Honorary Treasurer

You will have experience of accountancy or other financial experience in a commercial or not for profit organisation of a similar or larger size than DPN (annual turnover has grown from approximately £60k to £170k over the last two financial years and continuing to grow) and experience of corporate governance, preferably within the voluntary sector, either as a volunteer or as a senior member of staff, and with some experience of charity finance, investment and IT/IS.

The ability to present sometimes complex financial information to a variety of audiences in a clear and practical manner is essential. You will work alongside DPN’s fundraiser to analyse proposals for fundraising, as well as looking at proposed expenditure and investment and examine their financial consequences for the organisation.

DPN’s finances are out-sourced, but the Honorary Treasurer will oversee the financial matters of the charity in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements and report to the board of trustees at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.

To take over from our present Treasurer from the end of January 2009.

Vice-Chair

As well as your ability to make an effective contribution to the Board in terms of skills and experience, you will have had previous committee experience.

The role of Vice-Chair is to support the Chair when s/he is not available, chair meetings when he/she is unavailable and undertake assignments at the request of the Chair (eg, putting together a draft agenda for Trustee meetings). You would also need to be familiar with the work of DPN and be able to assume the responsibilities of the Chair should a sudden or unexpected absence occur.

Members of Board of Trustees

We are specifically seeking individuals with skills in business, financial management and Human Resources. Knowledge in the areas of business management, finance, legal issues, marketing, PR, fundraising, or the voluntary sector would be desirable.

70% of the Trustees must be disabled parents, so we are particularly keen to hear from you if you are a disabled parent.

Trustees are required to attend six meetings per year (usually Milton Keynes). This is a voluntary position but travel and other out-of-pocket expenses will be met.

How to apply: If you are interested in using your skills and experience to make a difference for disabled parents, please send a letter outlining your suitability and why you want to get involved to:

Simone Baker, Chair, Disabled Parents Network, 23 Northcourt Avenue, Reading, Berkshire RG2 7HE or email: simonebaker@disabledparentsnetwork.org.uk

Alternatively for an informal discussion, please call 0300 3300 639, press 3 at the menu prompt and leave a message for Simone and she will call you back.

Closing date: 23rd January 2009
